Castle Hill Blog 14/06/24
Good evening all! Some of you may be aware that I have spent the majority of the last three days on a training course developing my skills and understanding of restorative approaches. I feel strongly that a punitive approach to conflict and discipline does not have long lasting positive effects on a child's behaviour. I feel that all staff who work in Castle Hill have a duty to explore the individual needs of pupils when their behaviour falls below our expectations. It is important that an appropriate consequence is put in place but alongside this the pupil's voice must be heard. There must be an opportunity for them to be able to understand the harm that they may have caused and offer a suitable opportunity of reparation. Pupils are encouraged to attend a reflection session with a member of staff where they are guided to learn from the experience. We use the template below (the Hub pupils follow the same model with some adaptations based on need):
Through an approach which balances challenge and support we hope that we can sustain a community built on trust and communication.
Year 11 Leaver's Assembly
A rumble of applause could be heard through the corridors of our school this morning as our inspirational Year 11 pupils made their way into the hall for their final celebration assembly. A wave of joy and pride was felt by parents/carers and staff alike as they arrived to take their seats. As Abbie Nicholas, assistant headteacher, (and splendid chief organiser) read out each pupil's school highlights and ambitions for the future, it struck me yet again how incredibly fortunate I am to be able to have shared a piece of the journey that formed the outcome of who these young people have become. The positivity and support that the pupils have for each other was overwhelming. The genuine congratulations for their friends and peers when they received their recognition of achievements was an absolute pleasure to behold. Whether your young person is leaving us to go on to attend an alternative education provider or if they are returning to join our 6th form, I can't wait to hear and see what they will achieve next. I wish them the absolute very best for the future!
