Castle Hill Blog 05/05/23
Greetings! Another fantastic week here at Castle Hill. The excitement has been building all week for our Coronation celebrations. I am sure we will have lots of fabulous photos to share with you next week. Also, our footballers have shown exceptional talent and respect in a tournament against Reddish Hall School. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of their coach Ricky Deveroux.
Your students have been fantastic and have shown great sportsmanship. It’s been wonderful to see the pupils from both schools engage in healthy competition, develop resilience and enjoy the sporting experience. Assistant Headteacher, Kathryn Smith Reddish Hall School.
This week's spotlight is on our magnificent library! And who better to tell us about it than our very experienced and enthusiastic librarian Ann Bosset?
Here at Castle Hill, we value the importance of reading and our library really is the heart of our school. It is well resourced, with about 10,000 books, both fiction and non-fiction, and a bank of computers. It is staffed by a librarian and a library assistant who are able to guide and assist our pupils and generally encourage a love of reading.
The library is very well used. Every class has a library lesson each week which includes some reading and activities to improve literacy skills and encourage reading for pleasure. Books can be changed during morning reading sessions, every day and the library is also open at break and lunchtime for those pupils who prefer to spend some time in a calm, nurturing environment.
Accelerated Reader is a reading scheme which is used by our pupils. This means that they read books that are at the appropriate reading level for them to keep progressing their reading skills. When they have finished each book, they take a quiz about it, either in class or in the library.
Also taking place in our library are World Book Day celebrations and activities, book displays, competitions and author visits, as well as reading interventions and visits from Stevie the Wonder Dog who loves to listen to our pupils read!
